Bad American

Documentary School

On this page are several links to various documentaries that will never be shown on American television but you should see to be fully informed. I would say no one documentarian or film has the absolute truth but that all views should be considered, especially those outside of the mainstream. Watch these and make up your own mind.

Zeitgeist: The Movie

Independent film bites off quite a bit of material - the origins of Christianity, the official 9-11 story and the Federal Reserve. An interesting if somewhat incomplete presentation on all three topics in about 2 hours. Each of these subjects could bear separate treatment but this is a good introduction for further study. I especially like their deconstruction of the “official” 9-11 story. Some of the scenes and audio of 9-11 are quite graphic (not seen or heard on mainstream TV) and the viewer should be aware of this. Whether you think the filmmakers have successfully tied in all three elements is for your discussion but it is very provocative.

Loose Change

The grandaddy of all 9-11 truther sites and the biggest target for those attacking the truther movement. There is a big screen final cut of Loose Change coming soon which you can check out on the website.

The Power of Nightmares

A Channel 4 documentary from Britain in three parts all of which can be viewed here. From the site intro:

This film explores the origins in the 1940s and 50s of Islamic Fundamentalism in the Middle East, and Neoconservatism in America, parallels between these movements, and their effect on the world today. From the introduction to Part 1:

“Both [the Islamists and Neoconservatives] were idealists who were born out of the failure of the liberal dream to build a better world. And both had a very similar explanation for what caused that failure. These two groups have changed the world, but not in the way that either intended. Together, they created today’ss nightmare vision of a secret, organized evil that threatens the world. A fantasy that politicians then found restored their power and authority in a disillusioned age. And those with the darkest fears became the most powerful. ” The Power of Nightmares, Baby It’s Cold Outside.

Paths Toward Fascism

Talk by Naomi Wolf author of “The End of America: Letter of Warning To A Young Patriot” given October 11, 2007 at Kane Hall on the University of Washington campus.Americans expect to have freedom around us just as we expect to have air to breathe, so we have only limited understanding of the furnaces of repression that the Founders knew intimately. Few of us spend much time thinking about how “the system” they put in place protects our liberties. We spend even less time, considering how dictators in the past have broken down democracies or quelled pro-democracy uprisings.

Howard Zinn: The Myth of American Exceptionalism

Today, says Zinn, we have a president, who more than any before him, claims a special relationship with God. Zinn worries about an administration that deploys Christian zealotry to justify a war against terrorism, a war that in reality seems more about establishing a new beachhead in the oil-rich Middle East. He also sees great danger in Bush’s doctrines of unilateralism and pre-emptive war, which mark a great leap away from international standards of morality.

The Shock Doctrine - A Short Film

A Film by Alfonso Cuarón and Naomi Klein, directed by Jonás Cuarón.

“When I finished The Shock Doctrine, I sent it to Alfonso Cuarón because I adore his films and felt that the future he created for Children of Men was very close to the present I was seeing in disaster zones. I was hoping he would send me a quote for the book jacket and instead he pulled together this amazing team of artists — including Jonás Cuarón who directed and edited — to make The Shock Doctrine short film. It was one of those blessed projects where everything felt fated.” - Naomi Klein

War Made Easy

War Made Easy exposes a 50-year pattern of government deception and media spin that has dragged the United States into one war after another from Vietnam to Iraq. Narrated by actor and activist Sean Penn, the film exhumes remarkable archival footage of official distortion and exaggeration from LBJ to George W. Bush, revealing in stunning detail how the American news media have uncritically disseminated the pro-war messages of successive presidential administrations.
